Broward County commissioners have refused to buy the old Beach Hospital for treatment of alcoholics until an appraisal of the property at 125 Birch Road is completed.

The feasibility of buying the former Beach Hospital in Fort Lauderdale for an alcoholic detoxification and rehabilitation facility will be explored by Broward County officials. Eve Marsh, executive director of the Commission on Alcoholism, won Broward County Commission support yesterday for proposal to use the story building as a treatment facility which could ultimately care for 100 alcoholics.

The Broward County Commission has abandoned plans to transform the former Beach Hospital into an alcoholic treatment center... Commission Chairman Jack L. Moss said it would be "too expensive" to remodel the former medical to meet Fort Lauderdale building codes.

A majority of Fort Lauderdale city commissioners have indicated they will permit the old Beach Hospital to be used as an alcoholic detoxification center despite complaints from surrounding neighbors. Commissioners were told last week that residents near the old hospital building on Birch Road are unhappy with tentative plans by the Broward County Commission to purchase the building for $500,000 for use as rehabilitation center.
